After more than two years of waiting, Google has finally unveiled its own Bluetooth tracker: the Pixel Tag. Priced at $29, the device goes on sale November 11th and is clearly designed to take on Apple's AirTag 2 head-on. It brings together two precision-tracking technologies — ultra wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding — in a slim, lightweight design that integrates directly with Android's Find Hub device network.

The Pixel Tag is a significant addition to the ever-growing ecosystem of personal item trackers. While Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, and others have offered alternatives over the years, Google's entry into the hardware space carries special weight because of the massive reach of Android. With billions of active devices worldwide, the Find Hub network now has the potential to become a true rival to Apple's Find My network, and the Pixel Tag is the first device to be built specifically for that ecosystem.

Pricing and availability

The Pixel Tag will be available starting November 11th, at a retail price of $29 for a single unit. A four-pack will set buyers back $99, which works out to $24.75 per tag — the exact same pricing structure as Apple's AirTag 2. That aggressive pricing is no accident; Google is clearly aiming to make the Pixel Tag the default choice for Android users who have been eyeing AirTags with envy.

The November 11 on-sale date is later than some might have expected. Google's newly announced Pixel 11 and Pixel Watch 5, for example, are already available for preorder and will ship the following week. The staggered launch suggests Google is taking extra care to ensure the Pixel Tag's companion software and Find Hub integration are fully polished before the first units reach customers.

Design and hardware

Unlike the circular AirTag, the Pixel Tag is a slim oblong device. Its minimalist shape is reminiscent of a small pebble or a slim remote control battery, and it is available in a single grayish color Google calls Fog. Weighing approximately 12 grams, or 0.4 ounces, it is light enough to forget you are carrying it, yet sturdy enough to withstand daily wear and tear.

There are no built-in hooks, clips, or keyring holes on the body, much like the AirTag. This means buyers will need to invest in third-party accessories to attach the tag to keys, backpacks, luggage, or pets. Google may release its own accessories in the future, but for now, the tag itself is bare.

The Pixel Tag has a single physical button on its surface. Pressing it plays a sound on your phone, which is a clever reversal of the usual “find my tag” interaction. This button is particularly useful when you have the tag in your hand but cannot locate your phone — a common frustration that few other trackers address so directly.

Durability is well covered with an IP67 rating. The tag can survive dust ingress and immersion in up to one meter of freshwater for 30 minutes. That means rain, splashes, and even an accidental drop in a sink or puddle shouldn't cause permanent damage. It is not rated for continuous underwater use, so attaching it to a surfboard or pool toy is not advisable.

Power comes from a standard CR2032 coin cell battery, which is widely available and easy to replace. Google says a single battery should last for over a year. There is no proprietary charging cable or cradle, which will be a relief to anyone tired of juggling yet another USB-C dongle.

Two precision-tracking technologies

The Pixel Tag’s standout feature is its combination of UWB and Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding. Most trackers on the market rely solely on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to send out pings that are picked up by nearby phones. That approach can locate an item within a range of a few meters, but it cannot tell you which direction to walk or how far away the item is. The Pixel Tag aims to change that by offering two complementary layers of precision.

Ultra wideband is a short-range wireless technology that uses time-of-flight measurements to calculate the distance between two UWB-enabled devices with high accuracy. It also supports angle-of-arrival detection, which allows an app to display both the distance and direction to a tag. For example, if you have misplaced your wallet under a sofa cushion, the Pixel Tag app can guide you with a visual arrow and distance readout until the item is in view.

Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding, on the other hand, is a newer addition to the Bluetooth standard. It also measures the distance between devices, but it does so using phase-based ranging over the Bluetooth radio link. This provides accurate distance information without the need for a UWB chip. However, Channel Sounding does not provide directional guidance. It knows how far away the tag is, but not whether it is to your left, right, or behind you.

Having both technologies on board means the Pixel Tag can offer two levels of precision depending on the phone you are using. With a compatible UWB phone, you get the full directional finding experience. With a Bluetooth 6.0 phone that lacks UWB, you still get a precise distance readout, which is a significant step up from the vague “within 10 meters” signal that most BLE trackers provide.

Find Hub network and device compatibility

The Pixel Tag is natively compatible with Google’s Find Hub network, which uses the Bluetooth capabilities of Android devices around the world to help locate lost objects. Whenever a nearby Android phone running the Find Hub service detects a Pixel Tag, its location is securely reported to the owner through encrypted servers. This crowd-sourced approach is similar to Apple’s Find My network and is what makes it possible to track a lost item even when it is miles away from your own phone.

Google launched its Find Hub network over two years ago, but the rollout was rocky at first. Early users reported delays in location updates, inaccurate map pins, and limited support for third-party trackers. Since then, the network has improved steadily, with more frequent updates and tighter integration with Android’s Fast Pair system. Still, in some independent tests last year, Find Hub remained less precise than Apple’s Find My network, especially in dense urban environments where many Bluetooth signals can interfere with each other. Google is hoping that the Pixel Tag, with its dual-mode precision tracking, will close that gap.

To take advantage of UWB on the Pixel Tag, you’ll need a phone with a UWB chip. Google recommends any Pixel Pro model since the Pixel 6 Pro, as well as the Pixel 10 and Pixel 11 Pro. Interestingly, the base model Pixel 11 still lacks UWB, so budget-conscious Pixel fans will have to rely on Channel Sounding or standard Bluetooth range estimates. The UWB experience is also available on select Samsung Galaxy and other Android phones that include the chip, though Google’s own devices are the most tightly integrated.

Channel Sounding support is a bit more restrictive. The Pixel Tag is one of the first trackers to support Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding, and the Moto Tag 2 is the only other tracker currently to do so. To utilize it, you’ll need a phone or tablet with Bluetooth 6.0. On Google’s side, that means a Pixel 10 or later. The technology is backward-compatible with standard Bluetooth 5.x, but the precision distance measurement only works when both the phone and the tag support Channel Sounding.

Google is also extending Pixel Tag functionality to its smartwatch lineup. Any Pixel Watch running Wear OS can be used to track the Pixel Tag, with support for Channel Sounding on Pixel Watch 4 and newer, and UWB on Pixel Watch 2 and later. You can even ask Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, to ring the Pixel Tag’s speaker on your behalf — a hands-free convenience that feels like a natural extension of the company’s AI-first approach to hardware.

Battery life and maintenance

The Pixel Tag uses a CR2032 battery, which is a common coin cell found in many household devices. Google rates the battery for over a year of typical use, which is in line with the AirTag’s battery life. Replacing the battery is straightforward: you pop off the back cover, swap in a fresh cell, and snap the cover back on. The tag retains its pairing information through a battery change, so you won’t need to re-set it up.

While the 12-gram weight and IP67 rating make the tag suitable for a wide range of scenarios, the lack of an integrated attachment mechanism is a notable design trade-off. Like the AirTag, the Pixel Tag is meant to slip into a pocket, a purse, or a dedicated accessory sleeve. Users who want to attach it to keychains or pet collars will need to buy third-party holders, which are likely to appear quickly given Google’s ecosystem.

Comparison with AirTag 2 and other competitors

Apple’s AirTag 2 remains the benchmark in the item-tracker category, largely because of the immense scale of Apple’s Find My network. The AirTag also uses UWB for precise directional tracking on iPhones, but it lacks Bluetooth Channel Sounding. Instead, it relies on a second-generation ultra-wideband chip that offers extended range and slightly better accuracy. The Pixel Tag’s dual approach is arguably more flexible because Channel Sounding delivers a precise distance even on phones that lack UWB, which could be a key differentiator for Android users with mid-range devices.

Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag2 also competes in this space, but it does not support UWB on all models, and its UWB precision tracking is limited to Samsung phones. Google’s integration with Find Hub is broader, extending to any Android device that has opted into the network. This gives the Pixel Tag a potential advantage in raw network size, though Apple’s network remains more consistent in practice.

Tile has been a pioneer in Bluetooth trackers, but its non-UWB models offer only basic “ring” functionality, while its newer Pro models lack the kind of native integration Android users get with Find Hub. Chipolo is another popular option, and it has supported Google’s Find Hub network for some time, but its trackers do not yet combine UWB and Bluetooth Channel Sounding. The Pixel Tag is thus the first Android-first tracker to offer this particular feature combination.

Privacy and security considerations

With any item tracker, privacy is a major concern. Google has built Find Hub with end-to-end encryption for location data, and the company says it has implemented anti-stalking features to prevent the unauthorized tracking of individuals. The Pixel Tag will work with these safeguards, which include unsolicited location alerts when a tag that is not registered to your account moves with you over time. These alerts work across both Android and iOS, reducing the risk of malicious use.

Google is also committing to transparency with the Find Hub network. Users can view a map of when and where their tag was seen, and they can share tag locations with trusted contacts. The Pixel Tag’s speaker also plays a role in anti-stalking: if the tag is moved away from its owner and is in an unknown location, it may emit a sound to alert nearby people.

Looking ahead

The Pixel Tag represents Google’s most direct attempt to compete with Apple in the accessories market. By offering the same price as the AirTag 2 and adding a second precision-tracking technology that Apple lacks, Google is giving Android users a compelling reason to stay within its ecosystem. The true test, however, will come after launch, when the performance of Find Hub and the accuracy of Bluetooth Channel Sounding are put to real-world challenges.

Google has been steadily expanding its device lineup with the Pixel phone, Pixel Watch, Pixel Buds, and now the Pixel Tag. The tag is a logical extension of that ecosystem, and its integration with Gemini and the Find Hub network suggests it is more than just a novelty. As the network continues to improve and more Android devices support Bluetooth 6.0, the Pixel Tag could well become the default item tracker for millions of users.

For now, the Pixel Tag is a promising new option in a market that has long been dominated by the AirTag. It is affordable, technically impressive, and backed by the full weight of Google’s software and services. Whether it can unseat Apple remains to be seen, but for the first time, Google has a tracker that feels like a true flagship competitor.
