IBM is broadening the reach of its foundational mainframe portfolio by introducing new single frame and rack mounted versions of its Z and LinuxONE systems. The IBM z17 portfolio now includes single frame and rack mount configurations, while the LinuxONE Rockhopper family gains single frame, rack mount, and an Express model. These additions are designed to bring mainframe capabilities to smaller, more flexible deployment scenarios, targeting AI workloads and hybrid cloud environments.

The new hardware lineup includes the z17 single frame, which is a fully packaged box in an IBM rack with intelligent power distribution units, ready for edge or strategically important customer sites. The z17 rack mount allows customers to install IBM Z components directly into their own industry-standard rack, enabling co-location with other technologies. For LinuxONE, the Rockhopper 5 is a multi-drawer system for high-density workloads with on-chip AI acceleration, confidential computing, and post-quantum cryptography, available in both single frame and rack mount configurations. Additionally, the Rockhopper 5 rack mount and Express offerings deliver enterprise-grade Linux and AI acceleration in a compact 18U configuration, providing a cost-efficient entry point for organizations supporting smaller workloads.

Both the IBM z17 and LinuxONE Rockhopper 5 configurations support up to 82 cores and 18 TB of memory across two processor drawers, representing approximately a 20% increase in core count and 12% increase in memory capacity over current systems. Single processor capacity of the IBM z17 ME2 provides full-speed IBM z/OS configurations with 10% greater throughput per core than the IBM z16 A02, depending on workload and configuration. These systems feature a 5.5 GHz IBM Telum II processor and a built-in AI accelerator that enables customers to run over 450 billion inferencing operations per day with one millisecond response time. The 32-core Spyre AI accelerator is designed to handle diverse AI workloads, from fraud detection to insurance claims processing.

According to Tina Tarquinio, chief product officer for IBM Z & LinuxONE, the goal is to bring the core strengths of mainframes to a broader range of deployment models while maintaining the security, resilience, and performance enterprises require. She emphasized that IBM continues to innovate to deliver more with less, including up to 20% more capacity than the previous generation to support growing AI-driven workloads. Even the newest and smallest member of the IBM z17 family is built to provide the performance, efficiency, and scalability organizations need as they balance growth ambitions with resource constraints.

The Linux-based Rockhopper 5 is tailored for organizations ready to consolidate a substantial portion of their x86 estate, said Marcel Mitran, IBM Fellow and CTO of IBM LinuxONE. The system offers a smaller physical footprint and a software licensing model that reflects actual workload boundaries rather than physical server counts. The LinuxONE 5 Express is a preconfigured system designed for quick deployment, with a defined bill of materials and predictable starting cost. It targets organizations consolidating modest x86 estates, evaluating LinuxONE for the first time, or deploying specific workloads such as digital assets, AI-infused transaction processing, or confidential computing.

Software enhancements accompany the hardware launches. Post-quantum cryptography is now standard on the z17 and LinuxONE Rockhopper 5 systems, allowing customers to protect long-lived, mission-critical data while reducing future cryptographic migration costs. IBM also introduced Crypto Discovery & Inventory, enabling security teams to visualize encryption across the enterprise. The new Infrastructure Management for Z and LinuxONE package centralizes administration, monitoring, automation, and provisioning of systems, aiming to reduce operational complexity and lower administrative costs.

These new form factors are part of IBM's broader strategy to target hybrid cloud and AI infrastructure. The z17 is optimized for AI inference, transaction processing, training, and security applications. The company's recent study on mainframe usage found that 75% of executives expect mainframe-based applications to remain central to digital transformation, and 60% say mainframe platforms are essential for AI innovation. Gartner also noted that most mainframe customers are prioritizing technical debt reduction and adopting platform innovations to future-proof their environments for the coming decade.

The new z17 single frame and rack mount configurations, LinuxONE Rockhopper 5, and LinuxONE 5 Express will be available August 12, 2026. IBM Infrastructure Management for IBM Z and LinuxONE will follow on August 14. These launches underscore IBM's commitment to evolving mainframe technology for modern AI and hybrid cloud demands, offering organizations of all sizes access to enterprise-grade performance, security, and scalability.
