These platforms then allow creators to manipulate the likeness, making it speak, move, and appear as different characters in short dramas or advertisements. The practice is reshaping the entertainment industry, offering a scalable solution for the insatiable demand for virtual actors.

Contributors to these platforms have seen earnings ranging from $15 to $700, according to industry reports. Key players include ActID and New Claw, both of which operate marketplaces where faces are treated as digital assets. For studios, these virtual actors eliminate the logistical headaches of traditional shoots—no need for casting, scheduling, or on-set management. Contributors receive defined payment terms, but once their digital likeness leaves the platform, the contractual agreements cannot fully guarantee that every buyer will adhere to the intended usage.

How Face Licensing Works

ActID, one of the leading platforms, reportedly has around 800 registered users, with approximately 300 people actively licensing their likenesses. Creators pay between 99 and 500 yuan per episode (roughly $14 to $70) to use a face, while the platform takes a 10% commission. New Claw operates slightly differently: contributors upload their own images and set a minimum licensing price of 500 yuan per image. Buyers can then use those likenesses in AI-driven projects covered by the agreement.

The key distinction between traditional stock photography and face licensing lies in versatility. A stock photo captures a single expression in a single setting. In contrast, a licensed AI likeness can be inserted into multiple scenes, across different characters, and even across entire series. This flexibility gives buyers far more creative freedom but also creates more opportunities for misuse. Contributors must remain vigilant, tracking where their faces appear and whether usage exceeds the contractual scope.

The process typically begins with a contributor recording a series of facial expressions, angles, and movements. The platform then uses AI to generate a digital model that can be animated. Payment structures vary: some platforms pay per episode, others per image, and still others offer royalties based on how often a face is used. Despite these safeguards, enforcement remains a challenge, especially when buyers export the digital assets and manipulate them without oversight.

Why AI Needs So Many Faces

China's appetite for AI-generated entertainment has created an unprecedented demand for digital faces. According to figures from the China Netcasting Services Association, AI was used in more than 95% of the 128,000 microdramas released during the first quarter of 2026. Microdramas—short, vertically shot videos often less than 10 minutes per episode—have exploded in popularity, with platforms like Douyin and Kuaishou competing for content. Studios producing at this scale need characters they can license and deploy quickly, without the delays of human acting schedules.

The technology has even enabled entirely AI-generated casts for historical or fantasy series. For example, a "dynasty drama AI" tool allows producers to generate period-appropriate characters without hiring actors for each role. One photo session can lead to an unusually long acting career—albeit one that involves no trailers, no press tours, and no uncomfortable interviews. For many contributors, this offers a low-effort source of passive income. For studios, it drastically reduces production costs and timelines.

Critics argue that the rise of AI-generated faces could displace human actors, especially in background or supporting roles. However, proponents point out that the technology also creates new opportunities for individuals who may never step onto a physical set. The key ethical concern revolves around consent and compensation: once a digital likeness is out in the world, how do you ensure it isn't used in contexts the contributor never agreed to, such as political propaganda or adult content?

Legal Landscape and Enforcement Challenges

Chinese law requires explicit consent before biometric data—including facial features—can be processed. The Civil Code also prohibits fabricating someone's likeness without permission. Face-licensing platforms add contracts and technical restrictions intended to keep buyers within agreed uses. These measures include digital watermarks, limited-time licenses, and restricted export formats.

Yet enforcement is messy. The Guangzhou Internet Court has handled approximately 700 AI-related disputes over three years, including cases involving face-swapping, unauthorized use of likenesses, and copyright infringement. In one notable case, a plaintiff successfully sued a studio for using their AI-generated face in a film they had not consented to. The court ordered the studio to delete all copies and pay damages, but tracking every unauthorized copy proved nearly impossible.

Global context adds another layer. Unlike countries with robust data protection laws like the European Union's GDPR, China's enforcement mechanisms rely on a combination of platform self-regulation and judicial intervention. The face-licensing platforms themselves must balance user trust with business interests. They often include clauses that indemnify them from misuse by third-party buyers, placing the burden on contributors to monitor their own likenesses.

Experts advise that anyone tempted to license their face to AI should look beyond the initial fee and carefully examine how the platform tracks unauthorized use. A contract can define who has permission to use your likeness, but it cannot make every rogue image disappear. Contributors should also consider the long-term implications: once your face is digitized and widely distributed, it can be difficult to control where it appears or how it is altered.

The technology continues to evolve. New platforms are emerging that combine face licensing with real-time rendering, allowing for live AI performances and interactive experiences. Some even offer contributors a share of advertising revenue when their faces appear in commercials. As the industry matures, questions about ownership, privacy, and the value of a human face in the age of AI will only grow more pressing.
