Dress successful black, don a pointy witch’s hat, drawback a stand-up committee and a paddle — 1 that tin beryllium easy mistaken successful the fog arsenic a broom.

It’s the cleanable tableau for a spooky Halloween scene.

And it played retired successful Redondo Beach’s King Harbor Marina connected Sunday, Oct. 31.

Organizer Erin Hansen summoned water-loving witches and warlocks for the 2nd yearly South Bay Witches Paddle connected Halloween day. The Redondo Beach nonmigratory had the thought to make the coven past twelvemonth aft seeing a station astir a akin lawsuit successful Morro Bay.

And the thought took off.

To adhd to the magic, Hansen held a witches costume contention via societal media.

Hansen, a sixth-grade mathematics teacher astatine Chadwick School connected Palos Verdes Peninsula, said that since past Halloween came amid the bosom of the coronavirus pandemic, seeing everyone connected the water, safely having fun, made the inaugural Witches Paddle a gratifying experience.

“It was each astir radical uncovering bid and solitude,” Hansen said. “It’s joyousness to the assemblage that’s the biggest happening — bringing radical together.”

During the 2020 event, participants rallied for much holiday-themed paddles. So Hansen conjured immoderate up — each successful the sanction of instilling joyousness and bringing consciousness to the sport.

So far, there’s been a Thanksgiving-themed lawsuit and a Fourth of July event. Hansen said she helped the South Bay LGBTQ Center program a Pride paddle successful June, wherever rainbow colors and unicorns adorned the marina.

In December, however, Hansen canceled a Santa Paddle, arsenic it was astir the deadly wintertime coronavirus surge and she was acrophobic astir nationalist health.

Hansen has launched harborvibes.com, a website for water acquisition and for getting the connection retired astir the paddles.

She said she plans to parlay her organizational skills and emotion of stand-up paddle boarding into much fundraising for charities.

But for now, the paddles she hosts assistance entice radical to effort the sport.

“A batch of our paddles bring retired caller people,” Hansen said. “It’s a nice, amusive mode to larn the sport. Being portion of a large lawsuit helps radical travel retired and effort it.”

Hansen, who grew up astir the water, said not everyone has entree to a boat. And different h2o sports whitethorn beryllium challenging. But stand-up paddle boarding is easy, she said, particularly wrong the calmness of the breakwater.

Getting retired connected a stand-up committee is simply a large mode to get distant from the crowd, Hansen said, and bask immoderate bid and immoderate nature.

“Surfing is hard,” she said. “You get wet, you get toppled.”
